Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) contribute to the properties of hardened concrete through hydraulic or pozzolanic activity.
Fly ash is an SCM that is a byproduct of coal-fired power plants. For each tonne of fly ash used instead of pure Portland Cement, approximately 0.882 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions are avoided. Lehigh Cement has fly ash storage, distribution networks and rail capacity to ensure customers have a sustainable and reliable supply.
Fly ash resists sulphates, alkali aggregate reactivity (AAR), decreases permeability, shrinkage and thermal cracking. It has lower heat of hydration than straight cement, is more workable, pumpable, and stronger after 56 days.
*Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) are available in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Washington (sources vary).
