Through constant benchmarking, reporting, audits and continuous investment Lehigh Hanson is working to lead our industries in minimization of negative environmental.
Lehigh Hanson is designing and implementing Environmental Management Systems (EMS) for all business units. The EMS helps facilities manage, respond and track environmental performance. In coordination with the EMS, Lehigh utilizes a metrics tracking system called EnviroLIS which combines the individual facility information and location with environmental performance and tracking. We are diligently assessing the utilization of new technologies and enhanced automation when it comes to our environmental stewardship. Part of Lehigh Cement’s Edmonton facility EMS includes the creation of an annual Report Card. 2009 Annual Report and 2010 Annual Report.

At our Precast and Ready Mix concrete locations, we are striving for near zero waste. We reuse water at all of our sites and work to recycle all aspects of returned concrete. Where appropriate, we recycle the water and install reclaiming systems to recapture the aggregates into useable raw materials.

Many of our sites are also set up to recycle returned concrete into Octa-Bloc and big block forms. These are then available for other industrial uses and environmental controls such as maintaining and containing stockpiles. They are also used for controlling contaminations for clean materials in order to keep waste to a minimum.
Water Management
Lehigh Hanson minimizes its use of water within our operations reusing and recycling water at every opportunity through on-site filtration and treatment of the process water. When discharges are required, the water is treated and monitored to ensure it will not have significant impacts downstream of our operations.
Ambient Air Monitoring
Lehigh Hanson recognizes that large-scale industrial facilities are normally looked to first as primary contributors to air quality issues. For this reason, our Cement manufacturing facilities operate Continuous Emission Monitor Systems (CEMS) on all stack emissions. In addition to these, both Canada Region cement facilities have completed air dispersion modeling exercises that have been published publically in the associated jurisdictions. The Edmonton Cement facility has also been monitoring ambient air quality downwind of the facility since 2003.
